Last night, I introduced my husband to the world of black bean burgers.
Now before I go any further, I have to explain something to you. If you were to look in the dictionary under the word ‘vegetarian’ and then find the antonym, my husband’s picture would be there. He likes his meat… with every meal. I have noticed — as of late — that he couldn’t care less if I serve macaroni and cheese with broccoli, or wheat pasta with a tomato sauce, or even black beans and rice. He’s fine with that. But if I were to tell him that we were going to have a vegetarian meal and then make one of those meals, he would look at me with sad eyes as if to ask, “What did I do to you that you would take away my meat?”
It’s like dieting. If you know that a food you love is being taken away, you want it that much more.
What can I say, I married a meat-and-potatoes kind of guy.
And I’m fine with that, because I’m not a vegetarian either. But I have been trying to introduce us to new, vegetarian meals as of late; as I think that we should cut back on the meats. So thus entered the black bean burgers.
My sister recommended Gardenburger Black Bean Chipotle burgers, so I went with those. My husband eyed the package with much suspicion, but he was a good sport. Another thing about my husband is that he isn’t afraid to try something new. (Unless it’s goat cheese. He tends to shy away from that).
In order to make the burger as tasty as possible, I browned the sandwich buns until they were crispy, and topped it off with a slice of cheese and spicy salsa. And the end result was pretty good. Nate said that eating it didn’t make him feel sick or disgusted, and — to me — that’s a huge step in the right direction! I’m thinking that if I serve them once a month, he’ll really come around. 🙂
